Grayrigg CE School - Start Small Think Big

Morning Learning

For the academic year 2019-20 we have changed the class structure in the mornings - the information below is for parents with children currently in school.

In the mornings:

Children in nursery, reception and year 1 will be with Miss Littlewood and Mrs Jessop. Children in Reception and Year 1 will be taught English, Maths and Phonics. This will be done through some direct teaching and through investigation and challenges. Children will be encouraged to take control of their own learning and explore how to meet the desired outcomes in their own way. All children will have access to the wonderful learning environment which has been developed to allow children to access play based learning at different levels, enabling them to continue their learning within play. The amount of direct teaching will be dependent on the age of the children. Our new fold back doors enable us to provide them with a large learning space with free flow access to our outdoor classroom. In 2020 we plan to move the current reception and year 1 children into a year 1 and 2 class with Mrs Jessop.

Children in year 2 and 3 will work with Miss Robinson and Miss Hayton every morning. This class will be taught in the main school building. They will focus on English and mathematics in the mornings. In 2020 we plan to move the current year 2 and 3 children into a year 3 and 4 class with Miss Robinson.

Children in years 4,5 and 6 will be taught by Mrs Cooper. They start every day with spelling before either a morning of English or a morning of mathematics. Until the new build is in place, we will be using the Coronation Hall (which gives them lots and lots of space). In 2020 the intention is to allow the year 6 children to move on and keep this class as a year 5 and 6 class with Mrs Cooper.

For the academic year 2020-21 the intention is to have the following class structure:

  • Tiny Acorns: nursery and reception
  • Acorns: years 1 and 2
  • Oaks: years 3 and 4
  • Mighty Oaks: years 5 and 6
